Coyle brought in to help Hawks spring up the Championship

Hunslet Hawks RLFC are delighted to announce the signing of scrum half James Coyle from Workington Town. Coyle 27 joins his younger brother Thomas at the Hawks who is on loan at the club from Leigh Centurions.

Coyle is a former Wigan St Patricks half back and St John Fisher pupil. He played in Wigan's Academy setup in 2002 and 2003. He was handed the inaugural Edwards-Johnson Memorial Trophy, as their Senior Academy Player of the Year for 2003. The Under-21's award was renamed in honour of former Wigan Academy pair Billy-Joe Edwards and Craig Johnson, who died earlier in 2003, and was presented by Shaun Edwards.

Coyle captained the 2003 England Academy U17s squad that beat the Australian Institute of Sport for the first time. Coyle was also selected for the 2004 Academy Origin Series.

He was included in the Wigan Warriors first team squad for the first time in 2005 and made his debut off the bench against Hull. Coyle made his full debut the next weekend against Whitehaven in the Challenge Cup and had a man-of-the-match winning performance. Coyle capped 2005 by picking up the Wigan Supporters' Association under 21s Player of the Season award.

He joined his brother at Oldham in 2008 before moving to Barrow in 2010, he moved to Widnes in 2011 before joining Workington ahead of this season.

Director of Rugby Darren Williams said “ James started the season in the Workington side but picked up an injury and although now fully fit he has been unable to force his way into Gary Charlton’s line up, thanks to Gary and the Workington club for allowing James to join us, James is a good player he’s a great organiser who can break the defensive line and score tries.”

Williams added “ He joins us at a crucial point in the season with some key games on the horizon and with our first choice half back pairing out for some time (Danny Grimshaw & Luke Helliwell) through ankle injuries half back was an area we knew we needed to strengthen in.”

Meanwhile Williams revealed that Chris Clarkson has become the latest Leeds Rhino player to sign dual registration forms with the club and he along with Coyle will both make their debuts in Sunday’s home game against Halifax.
