Sonny Bill Williams has spoken out in support of good friend Reni Maitua, predicting rival NRL clubs will be queuing up for the unwanted Parramatta Eels co-captain’s services.
Maitua pulled out of the Eels’ 38-24 loss to the Roosters on Friday
night after being told he was one of a dozen players not part of coach Ricky Stuart’s plans for the future.
Stuart said Maitua, who was on the sidelines cheering on his
teammates at Parramatta Stadium, was a chance to return to the team for
Saturday’s clash with the Cronulla Sharks.
Williams described Maitua as one of the Eels’ most consistent
performers and backed the former Australian back-rower to continue his
NRL career.
”It’s a tough situation Reni is in at the moment,” Williams said. ”I
spoke to him and he’s in a good head space. To me, from the outside
looking in, he’s been one of the better players for Parramatta this
year.
”That will put him in good stead and I’m sure there will be a few
clubs lining up for his services for this year and next year as well.”
