The Auckland Vulcans recorded a third straight win as they steam-rolled a hapless Manly outfit 38-10 at Mount Smart Stadium.
After being perennial slow-starters in recent weeks the Vulcans registered their first try after only four minutes.
Last year’s Vulcan player of the year, Sam Lousi, producing a lovely offload in one of his first touches back from injury to put Pita Godinet over.
Minutes later Godinet, who after spending the first half of the season with the Vodafone Warriors was keen to impress, pushed his way over for a second try.
After a 20 minutes gap in scoring Auckland produced a lovely 60 meter effort, off the back of a few nice offloads up the middle of the ruck which created gaps on the left flank.
Patrick Sipley thought he had scored originally, but was inches short. On the next play, following a Manly penalty, Alehana Mara dove over to make it 18-0.
A penalty in front of the uprights on halftime gave the Vulcans a shot at goal and a 24-0 lead going into the break.
In the sheds Auckland coach Willie Swann stressed the need to finish the game off well and not leak silly points as they often had in 2013.
A Manly penalty on the opening set of the second half did nothing to halt the Vulcans momentum.
Bill Tupou received the ball meters out and looked to be headed for the touchline, but instead pulled three Manly defenders with him to the try line, Siejka was off target with the kick which left it at 28-0.
Lazy defending cost the Vulcans the chance to record a lockout on 60 minutes, Manly winger Jackson Williams crossing in the corner.
The collapse that coach Swann had warned of was creeping in, Manly producing a nice swift move to put Domenic Nasso in. The extras were added but the joy would be short lived.
Pita Godinet capped off a wonderful personal performance with a nice pass to put his halves partner Siejka into a gap for his double.
The icing on the cake arrived in the final minute, Carlos Tuimavave breaking the line and finding Tangi Ropati who raced 40 meters to score in the corner.
The final score of 38-10 would have pleased the Vulcans who now face back to back away games.
Their third win in a row ensures Auckland firm as top eight contenders, while Manly further confined themselves to the foot of the table.
Next week Auckland visit Windsor while Manly will get the two points from the bye round.
