Weald and Medway Meet In Kent Derby
Less than an hour after the London Broncos have finished their Super League game against Warrington Wolves at the Priestfield Stadium in Gillingham on Saturday, history will be made down the road when Kent’s two open age sides meet for the first time.
The Medway Dragons will be taking on Weald Warriors at their home ground, The Garrison, in a South East Regional League game which kicks off at 5.30pm. The Dragons were founded in 2007 and after establishing a thriving junior section they started an Open Age side in 2011.
Weald Warriors were set up just last year by Anthony Bennett, an exiled Wiganer who had played for Barrow and London Skolars. Based in Royal Tunbridge Wells, they are enjoying their first season in the South East Regional League and have established Academy and Reserve grade sides this year.
“All fans should know about the rude health of Rugby League in the area,” says Anthony. The potential for developing more players is huge, especially at a time when certain sections of the media have been questioning the success of Rugby League's expansion.
“They should come down and take a look at the quality on show at a grassroots level, and see the sport we all love being played with such enthusiasm. I have no doubt they would consider this a worthwhile investment."
He has been inspired by the success of Medway Dragons and the Weald’s game against them has huge significance. “It is events like this that make the hard work of establishing the sport we love outside the traditional heartlands worthwhile,” added Anthony.
"This is a great advert for Rugby League development in Kent, alongside the Broncos road show and the great work Medway are doing. It is an honour for Weald Warriors to be asked to participate in rounding off the day's Rugby League festivities against our Kent rivals.”
